What is Mamotomy?
It is a mode of breast biopsy with visualization by digital mammography or by ultrasonography, which allows accurate location of the lesions. The method obtains fragments of breast tissues by means of a needle which functions in association with a vacuum system. The collected material is sent for anatomopathological examination, which verifies the nature of the alterations.
What is it for?
Mammotomy is used to evaluate solid breast nodules, breast architecture distortions, lesions called microcalcifications, and any other suspicious formations.
How is it done?
Through digital mammography or ultrasonography, the radiologist locates the area of the biopsy, anesthesia the region and makes a small local incision, introducing the needle of the mammotomy. It then begins to remove the mammary fragments by activating the vacuum system and the cutting mechanism of the instrument, which allows the removal of several tissue samples with a single introduction of the needle. After collection is complete, the doctor will compress the punctured area to decrease the chance of bleeding. The mammotomy does not require hospitalization and allows the immediate recovery of the patient submitted to the procedure.
